I need to rent a car for my upcoming trip. Rent-A-Gem charges $20.25 per day plus 14 cents per mile. Super Saver Rentals charges $18.25 per day plus 22 cents per mile. At first glance it looks as if I should go with Super Saver Rentals. Still, I'm concerned about the per-mile charge because I plan to do a lot of driving during all three days of my trip.
- Which company should I use?
- How many miles would I have to drive to make the cost of renting a car from Rent-A-Gem the same as the cost of renting a car from Super Saver Rentals?
This took a bit for you to get started on, but you did a beautiful job. Make sure to keep in mind that you have three tools that will come in handy for many of these problems. Many of you choose to make a table here, but struggled with what the headings were and what kind of a scale to use. Excel seemed to help with some of those concerns.
Solution:
Super Saver Rentals is cheaper if I'm only driving a few miles, but Rent-A-Gem is cheaper if I'm going to be driving a lot of miles, at 75 miles the two costs are equal for both companies. I have included the tables that you sent to illustrate your points. They are listed below.

ReplyDeleteS.A I think you should use rent a gem because if you drive 75 miles or more then it would be a better deal and because you said you are going to drive a lot and I think that 75 miles or less in 3 days is not a lot. You would have to drive 25 miles for rent a gem to worth because at 75 miles they both cost at 71.25 and then the cost per miles is a lot lower so then if the table keeps going the total will start going lower and lower with gem

H.H I think you should use Rent-a-Gem because if you’re going to drive a lot of miles then you would want the company that makes you pay less for every mile that you drive because if you’re going to drive about 50 miles, then you’re going to pay more for Super Saver Rentals then Rent-A-Gem. Because if your going to drive 50 miles then Rent-A-Gem then it would be $67.75 and Super Saver Rentals would be $65.75

ReplyDeleteI think you should choose Rent-A-Gem. It may seem that Rent-A-Gem would be more expensive, but it’s only more expensive up until seventy-five miles. At seventy-five miles, both car rental companies have the same cost. And I have a feeling that you’re going to travel more than seventy-five miles since you stated that you’ll be traveling a lot.
I got this by creating a table. It started at zero, and went up by increments of twenty-five. At zero, I already had $60.75 for Rent-A-Gem and $54.75 for Super Saver Rentals because I had to find the flat fee for three days of driving. I knew that the two companies would be the same cost at seventy-five miles because they both had $71.25. To double check that Rent-A-Gem would be cheaper after seventy-five miles, I extended my graph, so that it had ten input numbers.
S.D.
ReplyDeleteFirst I took 3.00 which is the difference between the two and divided that by .08 (the rate that S.S.R. would catch up to R.A.G.) cents and that would give me how many miles they would have to travel to be equal (37.5) so if your planning to go more than 37.5 miles then I would choose Rent-A-Gem.
1.If you want to go more than 75 miles then you use Rent-a-Gem. If you want to go less 75 miles then you use Super Savers.

I think that he should go with Rent-A-Gem car rental. Super Saver Rentals may have a lower price per day, but they have to make up for that by a higher price per mile. • Be sure that you give all the details of your solution, including comparing all three tools that can be used to determine the correct answer.
• She would have to drive 75 miles to make the cost of Rent-A-Gem and Super Savers Rental the same. The cost would be $71.25.
• You should use rent-A-Gem Because after they meet 75miles Super Savers Rentals becomes more expensive. For example if you drive 100 miles both Rent-A-Gem and Super Saver Rentals it would cost 76.75 at Super Savers Rentals and it would cost 74.75 at Rent-A-Gem. So Rent-A-Gem would be $2.00 less expensive.

2. The answer to get them to be the same price is 75. After 76, Rent-A-Gem has the better deal. I used a table to find out how long it took for rent a gem to catch up.
P.M.
ReplyDeleteI would use Rent-A-Gem unless I was going on a longer trip than 76 miles because it takes a while for the price of Super Saver Rentals to catch up with Rent-A-Gem.
50 miles with Rent-A-Gem = 27.25
50 miles with Super Saver = 29.25
75 miles with Rent-A-Gem = 71.11
75 miles with Super Saver = 71.11
2. It would take them 75 miles to be at the same price. After passing 76 miles Super Saver
1. Rent a Gem is the best by because even when you combine the money per mile and the cost per day, you get couple dollars off compare to super save.

ReplyDeleteMs.Leckman is going to go for 3 days so the flat fees should be multiplied by 3 . You should use the rent a gem because they in the long run cost less. Once you pass 75 miles you should use the rent a gem. I think that you would go more than 75 miles so the rent a gem would make sense. For 150 miles it would cost $81.75 with Rent a Gem and it’s 87.75 with Super Savers Rentals.

ReplyDelete1.) Based on my table, if she drives less than 75 miles, she should go with Rent-A-Gem. If she plans on driving more than 75 miles, she should go with Super Saver Rentals.
2.) She needs to go 75 miles to have both car rental places to cost the same amount of money, which would be $71.25.
M.D.
ReplyDeleteFirst, I made a table. At 0, I multiplied both $20.25 and $18.25 by three, because in order to compare the total costs, it would be easier just to make it a total of three days so I can compare which company would be better to use for the trip, since it lasts three days. Then, for Rent-A-Gem, I added 14 cents for every mile in my table. For Super Saver Rentals, I added 22 cents for every mile in my table. Eventually, they both met up at 75 miles. So that means that if he drives 75 miles in three days he is paying $71.25. However, Super Saver Rentals was more cost effective until the time that they both met up. So he would get a better deal for his money if he used Super Saver Rentals rather than Rent-A-Gem.

ReplyDelete1. I think that you should use Super Save.
2. You would have to travel 75 miles to make the cost of renting a car from Rent-a-Gem the same cost as renting a car from Super Save Rental.
Car problem
ReplyDeleteLet’s say that a person needs help on which car rental company he/she needs to use for a three day trip. To give advice to this person, I would say that the cheapest prices for the first 76 miles would be at Super Saver, but then at 77 miles, both companies would have the same price so it doesn’t matter which company he/she chooses. Then from 78 to 100 miles, Rent-A-Gem would be cheaper.
